Abstract
Illegal tungsten mining in Colombia is not something the American public really knows about. The FARC is a terrorist group that has plunged Colombia into a fifty year war, and we the American people help to fund them with our cars, phones, pens, and computers. The FARC is a terrorist group that began in May of 1964, and has since then been in a constant war with the people in power. When this group started they were an army for the people, but after a few years of war it seemed that they became more concerned with political power then helping the people.  Colombia provides less than 1% of the world’s tungsten, which doesn’t sound like much, but it’s enough to make it more important financial income for FARC then kidnaping. The government of Colombia has been working to take the illegal mines run by this guerrilla group by confiscating boats attempting to smuggle the Tungsten and other illegal substances up the Inirida River in Colombia.
In todays’ world everyone is connected, people in Colorado can now talk to people in Moscow by simply turning on their computer and logging on to the internet. So it should be important to everyone to preserve the lives of our fellow human beings.  At this point in time nobody really cares what happens to anyone else, as long as it doesn’t affect their perfect world. Well it’s about time that we start to care, and start to take the initiative to stop funding organizations like FARC. It’s time that our local American companies start looking into where they are getting all of their supplies, and looking into ways of finding a legal, conflict free source for their products.
